ZAN-SHIN Co., Ltd. (株式会社ZAN-SHIN), also known as ZAN-SHIN KK. and ZAN-SHIN Inc., is an entertainment and content production company located in Shibuya Ward, Japan formed by producer HirotoP. Their first vocal, ROSA, was released as a Talk Voice library for CeVIO AI and as an AI singing voice database for Synthesizer V Studio. Their second vocal, WhiteCUL, was released as a talk voice library for VOICEVOX and is currently in development as a singing voicebank for VOCALOID6.

HirotoP previously collaborated with Internet Co., Ltd. as part of doujin group CULNOZA under the title VOCALO Revolution in 2011 and released their first VOCALOID3 library CUL.

Key people[]

HirotoP Hiroto Izumi (和泉ヒロト), also known by his producer name, HirotoP (ヒロトP), is known as the Director CCO of ZAN-SHIN Co., Ltd. and had direct involvement with the VOCALOID CUL produced by VOCALO Revolution. He is also the temporary voice provider of REV's DeepVocal voicebank.

History[]

2010s: VOCALO Revolution and CULNOZA[]

From late October 2010[1] to November, HirotoP made multiple tweets regarding the production of "VOCALO Revolution" and teasers of a character called CUL, the mascot of the show. On October 18, HirotoP mentioned that CUL's design had been completed.[2] On December 10th, HirotoP revealed that CUL's birthday is December 24th,[3] the same day as her planned debut.[4]

On December 10, VOCALO Revolution's website went live, though HirotoP mentioned that the site was still under construction and to expect further updates.[5] On December 15, the VOCALO Revolution site put up their character page, featuring a short entry for CUL,[6] a VOCALOID character from the show who uses VY1's voice.[7] A day later, they uploaded their staff page, introducing CULNOZA, the network of creators involved in various productions, with CUL, the original VOCALOID character of the TV program, as the central hub.[8][9] Alongside HirotoP as the Program Producer, General Director and CUL concept creator, there was Lat, CUL's 3D MMD Modeler and 4 VocaloPs, Mie no Hito (三重の人), monaca:factory, WakamuraP (わかむらP), and MasatakaP (まさたかP).

She made her public debut on December 24 as expected in "CUL makes REVOLUTION!"[10] by MasatakaP. She would be featured in a few more PVs, particularly, VY1 covers of LifeSize by WakamuraP, Shiro no Kisetsu (白の季節) by Mie no Hito and Kimi, Boku, Kyori-kan (キミ、ボク、距離感) by WakamuraP.

On January 1, 2011, VOCALO Revolution opened the CUL project: official website, a website designed to promote making her an official VOCALOID. She later appeared on "VOCALO Revolution" on January 3rd.

On January 21, VOCALO Revolution introduced Lucia, a toy poodle from CUL's neighborhood. On February 4, they would release a black recolor of CUL's Lat model dubbed "BLACKCUL", described as another version of CUL. BLACKCUL would later see another appearance as part of a merch line released in December; upon seeing CUL, the artist, キムラマサヒコ, described her as a "high school girl who dyes her hair and wears a variety of casual clothes.", noted to be very different from other VOCALOIDs at the time. As such, one of the illustrations she made for merchandise featured a black-haired CUL on her way to school, implying that the original red-haired design, dubbed REDCUL, was just BLACKCUL with her hair dyed.[11]

A new original character was revealed on May 5 named REV. He was added to the VOCALO Revolution official website a day later on May 6 and was intended to be a male counterpart to CUL, using VY2.[12] A 3D model for MikuMikuDance by Kio was also released soon after his introduction.[13][14].

On June 7, HirotoP announced that he would be making an important announcement at the "Secret VOCALOID" event on June 8.[15][16] According to the press release on NicoNico Info, the event was sponsored by YAMAHA Corporation and that new VOCALOID information would be released. Come June 8, on the same event that formally announced VOCALOID3, it was announced that VOCALO Revolution would be involved in making a VOCALOID3 voicebank[17] for CUL voiced by Eri Kitamura.[18] She would be joining Aoki Lapis, Suzune Ring, and Hibiki Lui alongside characters from YAMAHA Music based on Sakamoto Miu, 1st PLACE based on Lia, and Dear Stage as new characters for VOCALOID.[19][20]

A demo of her prototype, dubbed CULβ, was showcased on October 21.[21] And on the next day, October 22, they announced the final product would be releasing around late December to January.[22] On November 2, HirotoP announced that CUL would be receiving a new design for her VOCALOID3 voicebank and that they were currently in the process of creating new designs.[23] The publisher was confirmed to be Internet Co., Ltd. on November 4. On November 13, the new illustration was said to be completed and that it would be shown off on November 18 on both Internet Co. and VOCALO Revolution's website. HirotoP also noted that the direction of her new design has gone for a goth-punk look.[24] On November 18, they revealed CUL's new design as well as announced the product's definite release date of December 22. She received a few more demos after that, Aoi Toki on November 24[25] and ☆Magical☆ on December 4.[26] CUL would release as expected on December 22.

HirotoP referred to her VOCALOID3 release as "CUL's ReBirth" [27] and would later go on to dub CUL's debut design, "1st.CUL".[28]

On April Fools 2013, HirotoP joked that REV would be becoming a VOCALOID and that he would be voicing him.[29] HirotoP would later on reveal that while it was just an April Fool's joke, he does have a genuine interest in making REV a VOCALOID and that he had some plans for his potential voice provider but that he wasn't sure when he could make it happen.[30]

On June 29, MMD model creator, mqdl, pointed out that in CUL's 1st.CUL design, there is a logo similar to the kanji for flower present on the back of her shirt;[31] in response HirotoP revealed that CUL was the youngest of four sisters themed around "Fuusetsugekka" (風雪月花). The sisters were themed around a different color: blue, white, yellow, and red and based on the concepts of wind, snow, moon, and flowers respectfully. The wind sister was the eldest with the sisters based around the moon and snow being twins,[32] and CUL representing the color red and the flower element specifically.[33] BLACKCUL, CUL's twin sister who was themed around the color black, was also mentioned. The sisters were later given profiles and featured in a comic illustrated by Megumi Inomata.[34][35]

In July 2013, Internet Co. announced a Mac update of V3 CUL for the VOCALOID NEO engine.[36]

In October 2014, when asked in an interview if any vocal produced any hard labor, Noboru mentioned that CUL was a hard VOCALOID to produce as when synthesized she gave a result that was under expected quality. Noboru mentioned they had to scrap her original vocal and rebuild it from scratch. They had to re-build the vocal twice, though no re-recordings were involved.[37]

2020[]

On April 10, 2020, HirotoP reiterated that, like CUL using VY1 as a voice, REV was supposed to use VY2, and like CUL, there were plans to give him a VOCALOID voicebank.[38]

On September 19, HirotoP disclosed more information regarding REV's profile that was not publicly stated when REV first appeared.[39][40] He also reiterated the fact that CUL has sisters aside from BLACKCUL.[41] He also stated briefly that there was a story regarding the sisters that has not been revealed before.

2021: ZAN-SHIN and ROSA[]

On March 3, 2021, HirotoP revealed that he would be launching a company; however, he wouldn't be the president but rather its Chief Creative Officer, head of the production division.[42] Alongside being a music, voice talent and content management agency, they plan on focusing on producing vocal synthesis software.[43] After registration was processed at the Shibuya branch of the Tokyo Legal Affairs Bureau, HirotoP revealed that the name of his new company is ZAN-SHIN.[44]

On March 19, HirotoP teased CUL's sisters and their story again.[45][46] However, in response to an inquiry regarding their designs and profile, HirotoP mentioned that it's still a mystery,[47] suggesting that the profiles introduced in the Megumi Inomata comic may not be used.[48]

A day later on March 20, HirotoP confirmed that a new character, ROSA, CUL's younger sister with a pink theme, was in production for an AI singing and talk synthesizer. She was to be developed in collaboration with his new company, ZAN-SHIN Co., Ltd.[49][50]

On March 25, it was mentioned that ROSA's voice actress would be chosen via an audition taking place in April.[51] HirotoP also discussed the time when Eri Kitamura recorded for CUL and that she was directed to make a voice that was completely different to other VOCALOIDs, which resulted in a strong voice. The voice direction for ROSA's actress would be treated the same, though it depended on the results of the audition.[52] He later clarified that ROSA's singing voice database would be for either Synthesizer V Studio or CeVIO AI Song and that her talking voicebank would be for either A.I.VOICE or CeVIO AI Talk, but the final decision would not be announced until April.[53][54] In addition, due to an unexpectedly high interest from western fans, HirotoP was also considering possible English singing and speech voicebanks for ROSA.[55] On the same day, in response to a fan's inquiry, HirotoP also expressed interest in updating CUL but did not give further details.[56]

HirotoP proceeding with ZAN-SHIN Co., Ltd., his own company that he formed, suggested that ZAN-SHIN succeeds VOCALO Revolution and CULNOZA in producing vocals for the CUL Project.

On March 26, ROSA's illustrator was selected and would be announced once her final artwork was ready.[57] On March 27, ROSA's singing voice database weas confirmed to be developed for Synthesizer V. Synthesizer V was chosen due to the synthesizer's ease of use and ability to use VSQx files.[58]

On April 2, a recruitment post for users interested in creating songs and talk segments with ROSA was launched.[59] On April 3, HirotoP mentioned that the company was interested in collaborating with Internet Co., Ltd. in distributing ROSA since they distributed CUL's VOCALOID3 packages in 2011.[60] On the same day, HirotoP announced that ROSA's speech voicebank would be released for CeVIO AI.[61]

ROSA's audition was launched on April 17. The illustration was confirmed to be released soon.[62] Details and scheduling for the audition were noted on ZAN-SHIN Co., Ltd.'s official website for ROSA.[63] A preview of ROSA's face was shown on April 20.[64][65] On April 28, results of the first audition screening were revealed to be China Kitahara, Shirayuki, Juudenki, Minori Ninomiya, and Yuka Hiyamizu.[66][67][68] ROSA's lineart for both Synthesizer V and CeVIO AI were revealed on May 1, and the colored sketches (rough illustrations) were released on May 4.[69][70]

On May 8, Shirayuki was confirmed to be the chosen voice actress.[71][72] Recording sessions for ROSA began on May 14.[73] On May 15, Yoshida Iyo was confirmed to be the illustrator, and the final artwork was shown.[74] Information about ROSA's crowdfunding campaign in collaboration with SSS LLC. was revealed and was confirmed to run from June 1 to June 30 on GREEN FUNDING.[75] The production project for ROSA's CeVIO AI talk voicebank would begin afterwards, and the project's page would be published as soon as it was ready. At that time, ZAN-SHIN was considering a system that would allow overseas fans to participate. The release order was confirmed to be the following: Japanese CeVIO AI Talk, Japanese Synthesizer V AI, English CeVIO AI Talk, and English Synthesizer V AI.[76][77]

The start date for the crowdfund campaign was later changed to June 3, and procedures for overseas investors were being worked upon, but it was confirmed that this may be delayed.[78] The goal was set to 7 million yen.[79] The crowdfund for ROSA's CeVIO AI Talk voice began on June 3 with six tiers for Japanese supporters and three tiers for overseas supporters. A sample of Shirayuki voice acting as ROSA was made available in the campaign to give supporters an idea of what ROSA may sound like prior to creating her voicebank.[80] She was fully funded on June 30, a few hours before the campaign's end, with 112% funded.[81] Shirayuki began test recordings for the CeVIO AI's Talk library on July 22, with ZAN-SHIN fully focusing on the production of the CeVIO AI Talk voicebank at this point in time.[82]

On May 14, the REV reboot project, HirotoP's personal project, was announced.[83] HirotoP noted that he would be tentatively providing his voice for this project, however, he stated that depending on if REV's popularity improved, his voice may be provided by a professional voice actor or singer for a commercial engine.[84][85] REV would receive a speech library for the AI text-to-speech synthesizer, TALQu, on May 23[86][87] and a beta singing library for the DeepVocal singing synthesizer on May 24.[88][89] He would later receive an additional AI speech synthesis library for the CoeFont CLOUD speech synthesizer on July 19.[90]

On November 24, HirotoP created a demo song for Tsuina-chan's AI voice database. In a reply to the demo post, ROSA's official account noted that it may take some time before she would be able to talk to her and Koharu Rikka, then asked if they could sing together next year.[91] When her CeVIO AI Talk Voice was announced to be releasing on December 17, ROSA's Twitter shared transparent versions of her CeVIO and Synthesizer V key artwork. On the Synthesizer V version's post, it was noted that ZAN-SHIN planned to have it created in 2022.[92]

On December 1, it was announced that ROSA was expected to release as physical packages and digital downloads. There were options to purchase her on her own or as a starter pack, and she was confirmed to be obtainable through Internet Co., Ltd.[93][94] She released on December 17 as intended.[95]

2022: Re:CUL Project[]

On February 17, 2022, via CUL's official Twitter account, HirotoP divulged the lore behind the CUL sisters, and the ages of the other sisters were revealed.

  • "WINDCUL" (風CUL) is 19 years old,
  • "WhiteCUL" (formerly known as "SnowCUL" (雪CUL)) is 18,
  • "MOONCUL" (月CUL) is 17,
  • "RE:CUL" or "REDCUL" (赤CUL)(also known as "FlowerCUL" (花CUL) and BLACKCUL (黒CUL) are 16, and
  • ROSA is 15.[96][97]

On March 27, HirotoP announced the RE:CUL Project, a project revolving around CUL's original sisters. The first of whom, WhiteCUL, was announced at the "Software Talk Video Posting Festival Supporting Festival" (ソフトウェアトーク動画投稿祭応援しまくる祭) from the VOICECONNECT 2 doujinshi convention to be receiving a speech library for VOICEVOX that was expected to release in the summer. Illustrations would be released in the future.[98][99][100][101] The next day, CUL's Twitter account gave a short introduction about WhiteCUL. She was introduced as the older sister of CUL at the age of 18. Her nickname was stated to be "Yuki-san" and she was the tallest of the four sisters. Her hair was noted to be tied in a ponytail. Further information was expected to be released little by little later on.[102] Recording for WhiteCUL began on April 16.[103][104] On April 23, HirotoP showed an image of himself cutting the recording material.[105] By May 1, only 160 more needed to be cut before all of WhiteCUL's materials would be complete.[106]

On May 24, CUL's Twitter account announced that there would be news about WhiteCUL soon.[107] On June 3, ROSA tweeted that she and WhiteCUL would be performing at the 柚子花主催LIVE -Planet Station- STAGE.3 online concert on June 19; however, WhiteCUL's character design would not be shown.[108][109][110] On June 15, the lineup revealed that ROSA and WhiteCUL were expected to perform second, with the both of them singing.[111][112][113] On the day of the concert, without a character to represent her, WhiteCUL was instead featured as a white sphere with her name written in black font.[114] It was later clarified that the singing voices for ROSA and WhiteCUL were performed by their voice providers rather than using singing voice synthesizers. HirotoP hoped that the performances would give listeners an idea of what an AI singing voice database would sound like. It was unknown if WhiteCUL would be receiving a singing voicebank as, at the time, only ROSA was confirmed to be receiving a Synthesizer V AI voice database.[115]

On June 25, the progress of WhiteCUL's VOICEVOX voicebank was to be shown in a livestream at 18:30 JST.[116] On June 30, HirotoP tweeted that a rough design for WhiteCUL and a sample of her VOICEVOX voicebank may be shown soon.[117] Another livestream featuring details about WhiteCUL was launched on July 9.[118][119]

On September 9, it was announced that WhiteCUL, Goki, and No.7 would be releasing at the same time on September 30.[120] On September 30, HirotoP tweeted that a large announcement for WhiteCUL was scheduled for the next day and would be posted via the official ZAN-SHIN Co., Ltd. Twitter account.[121] This included illustrations and samples of her voice.[122][123][124] He also confirmed that her age had been changed to 20.[125]

On September 21, details about WhiteCUL's character and her illustrations, which included her key art and reference sheet, were revealed.[126][127] A sample of her "Normal" emotion for VOICEVOX was also shown.[128] On September 23, aoirooto was confirmed to be the official illustrator for WhiteCUL.[129]

On September 27, in response to a fan's question about the status of ROSA's Synthesizer V AI production, ZAN-SHIN confirmed that it had not started at the time but was still planned to be made.[130]

WhiteCUL was released on September 30, as expected. She along with Goki and No.7 are considered the fifth generation of VOICEVOX vocals. WhiteCUL released with four styles: Normal (ノーマル), Fun (たのしい), Sad (かなしい), and Bie~n (びえーん). WhiteCUL's Bie~n style in particular was the product of HirotoP wanting an iconic voice, and VirVox Project proposed the Bie~n emotion they were making for Shirakami Kotarou's additional style update, which was still in its experimental stage at the time.[131]

2023[]

On January 1st, 2023, as part of their New Year's greeting, HirotoP mentioned wanting to expand activities for ROSA, WhiteCUL, CUL, and REV for the year.[132]

On May 31, Shirayuki tweeted that she had spent the past couple of days listening to and recording three songs, which started since 14:00 JST. She noted that "it reminded me of the nightmare of recording the talk software". However, it was not specified what the recordings were for.[133]

On July 25, HirotoP expressed interest in renewing CUL, although it would be a long ways off; he mentioned giving her a new design, renaming her RE:CUL or REDCUL, and even changing her voice provider. He cited that since her voice provider is famous now, it also meant she's busy. He mentioned holding an audition to find a new voice for CUL.[134]

On August 18, HirotoP updated the ages for some of the sisters.[135]

  • WINDCUL is 21 from 19.
  • WhiteCUL is still 20 from when her age was first changed.
  • MOONCUL is 18 from 17.

On October 7, he updated the ages again for most of the sisters, as well as retconned parts of the then-established lore.[136]

  • WINDCUL is 22 from 21.
  • REDCUL and BLACKCUL are 17 from 16.

On October 23, after an apology for the delays, ZAN-SHIN tweeted that the crowdfund for ROSA's Synthesizer V singing library would start in mid-November.[137] The crowdfund was later pushed back to January or February of next year; AH-Software Co. Ltd. was also mentioned to be handling the production of her singing voice database.[138] CUL's Twitter tweeted out asking for support with the crowdfund, mentioning that if ROSA and WhiteCUL do well, CUL's turn might be next.[139] It should be pointed out that while the crowdfund was for ROSA's singing AI voicebank, there had been no official mention of WhiteCUL being included in the crowdfund, least of all being on Synthesizer V.

On November 21, GUMI Radio announced (and HirotoP quoted) that Internet Co., Ltd. would handle the packaging and distribution of Synthesizer V ROSA in both physical-package and digital-download versions.[140][141]

2024: ROSA and WhiteCUL[]

On January 30, 2024, during a GUMI Radio broadcast hosted by GUMI, Otomachi Una, Camui Gackpo, and kokone, a sample of ROSA's developmental stage voice database was shown.[142][143]

On February 2, the crowdfund campaign for ROSA's Synthesizer V AI voice database production project was announced to start the next week.[144] Start date and time for the crowdfund were later specified to be February 7 at 21:00 (9:00 PM) in Japan Standard Time, and the platform chosen for it was Ubgoe.[145] For overseas supporters, special courses accepting PayPal payments were created (as Ubgoe only directly supports credit cards issued by Japanese banks); for courses involving physical goods (as well as the physical edition of the voice database), overseas customers were also asked to register with an international mail-forwarding proxy service like Tenso (because Ubgoe only accepts Japanese addresses, even for non-physical courses);[146] a later tweet clarified that the overseas download course did not require entering any valid address, encouraging users to support it as is without using any forwarding company since they "do not acquire addresses".[147] End date was specified to be February 28 at 23:59 (11:59 PM) JST.[148]

When asked by a follower, ROSA's Twitter account was unable to know if she would receive a Lite version of her voice database.[149][150]

The crowdfund ended with the support of 251 backers (including 22 overseas backers) pledging ¥5,171,950 yen, almost 74% of the original goal of 7 million yen.[151]

On May 7, her boxart was revealed, and the release date was set to June 3.[152] Users noticed an error on the boxart shown for the Starter Pack, which mistakenly said Megpoid instead of ROSA on the box spine; this was fixed in a matter of a few hours. On May 29, ROSA celebrated getting 5000 followers on Twitter by tweeting a cropped teaser of her crowdfund-backer-exclusive alternative artwork drawn by Saki Ohenri.[153][154] On June 1, HirotoP tweeted that he was busy making the preparations for making and delivering the crowdfund rewards and setting up the release party. There he also showed a photo of ROSA's standalone voice-database DVD case as well as a cropped photo of the top half of ROSA's alternative boxart by Ohenri, which was to be delivered to crowdfund backers who pledged for her Physical Course.[155] On June 2, some of her physical crowdfund supporters started to receive her package with the Ohenri boxart along with their other rewards, while her digital crowdfund supporters started to receive her activation codes early (download links for the voice database on the other hand would not be delivered until the day of release at noon).

On May 20, a crowdfunding campaign for the development of a VOCALOID6 voicebank for WhiteCUL was announced on her official Twitter account.[156] The crowdfund was announced to be launched by ZAN-SHIN Co., Ltd. via CAMPFIRE on May 24, and was listed as an "All or nothing" campaign with the release being unconfirmed at the time, though WhiteCUL noted that she was hopeful of getting closer to her dream of releasing a music software.[157] The official crowdfund page was made available and detailed an initial goal of ¥7,000,000 yen, with additional stratch goals added for the production of original music & PV productions and a new 3D model production for free distribution, based on WhiteCUL's new design.[158] The goal of the campaign was to develop a VOCALOID6 AI voicebank for WhiteCUL and produce goods to introduce her to the world. Funds from the crowdfund would be used should the goal be reached, for part of the VOCALOID6 voicebank development costs, production and delivery of return goods as well as various fees and processing costs and other expenses related to production. Options for courses to receive Digital Download editions and physical Packaged Versions of her VOCALOID6 voicebanks were added. Return goods included:

It was noted that overseas patrons would have to use a forwarding service such as Tenso, to support the campaign.[159][160] A YouTube broadcast was held on May 24 featuring WhiteCUL (representing her voice provider), guest starring HirotoP and Ryouta {りょうた} from ZAN-SHIN Co., Ltd., commemorating the start of the crowdfund.[161] WhiteCUL began posting various thank-you messages to supporters days after the start of the campaign.[162][163][164] The crowdfund launched on May 24 as expected and became the most popular CAMPFIRE campaign during the start.[165] On May 27, the crowdfund reached 28% of its funding goal, prompting a celebratory tweet from WhiteCUL as well as acknowledgement from the official Yamaha VOCALOID and GUMI from Megpoid Twitter accounts.[166][167][168]

A promotional cover was posted to the official WhiteCUL YouTube channel featuring her voice provider singing REALiZE by LiSA, providing supporters an idea of how WhiteCUL may sound.[169][170] By June 4, 41% of the goal was raised; WhiteCUL noted that she was a bit worried but remained hopeful.[171] A sample of what would be WhiteCUL's illustration designed by aoirooto was posted on June 11 in the midst of the crowdfund, as well as a full illustration of what would be used for crowdfund-exclusive merchandise and as the package illustration. A promotional commercial advertising the crowdfund was posted soon after.[172][173] By June 23, nearly 81% of the crowdfund was achieved.[174]

A commemorative YouTube broadcast was announced to be held on June 30 following the crowdfund.[175] On June 27, her crowdfund met its goal of ¥7,000,000 yen.[176] The first stretch goal was achieved on June 28.[177] The crowdfund officially concluded on June 30 with over ¥12,100,946 raised by 535 supporters.

BLACKCUL (黒CUL), also known as Nuregarasu (濡鴉, Wet Crow - a term used to describe the color of lustrous black hair, so black it appears to shine almost dark blue, akin to a wet crow's iridescent plumage) is CUL's twin sister. She was originally a black recolor of CUL's Lat model, being dubbed BLACKCUL to differentiate herself from 1st.CUL (dubbed REDCUL). She was estranged from her family when she was young and grew up working for the very forces that threaten her home village. BLACKCUL was initially 16 years old when introduced.[96] Her age was later changed to 17 on October 7, 2023 along with CUL.[136]

Similar to CUL, VY1 was used to be her voice in songs.[178]

MOONCUL[]

MOONCUL, also known as TsukiCUL (月CUL, MoonCUL)) or just Tsuki (つき), is one of ROSA's older sisters. MOONCUL was conceptualized around the same time BLACKCUL and REV were first introduced, but it wasn't until a decade later that HirotoP planned to give her a proper character. She reportedly has yellow hair in twin tails.[179] MOONCUL was initially 17 years old when introduced.[96] Her age was later changed to 18 on August 18, 2023.[97] Conceptually, she was to be the twin sister of WhiteCUL;[32] however, as of the last age change for many of the CUL sisters, this may no longer be the case as WhiteCUL is 20 years old comparatively. HirotoP noted that the reason she has not yet debuted, is that she is currently traveling with WINDCUL.[180]

WINDCUL was conceptualized around the same time BLACKCUL and REV were first introduced, but it wasn't until a decade later that HirotoP planned to give her a proper character. She reportedly has short blue hair.[179] WINDCUL was initially 19 years old when introduced.[96] Her age was later changed to 21 on August 18, 2023,[97] and for a third time to 22 on October 7.[136] HirotoP noted that the reason she has not yet debuted, is that she is currently traveling with MOONCUL.[180]

Lucia[]

Lucia illust

Lucia (るちあ) is a toy poodle with headphones that lives in CUL's neighborhood.[185][186] Her name is a pun on CULTURE, if you put CUL's name and the last two syllables of Lucia's name together, you get CULTURE (カルチア). Lucia is described as always overdoing things and scolding CUL. Her birthday is January 21, and she is a fan of the voice actress Mizuki Nana. Unlike other characters, Lucia was not created by HirotoP but by mion, a member of CULNOZA.[187]

  • Lucia was considered to be a name for HirotoP's pet poodle, who bears a resemblance to Lucia; however, he decided it was not a fitting name and went with the name "Noah-chan" (ノアちゃん) instead.[188]

VOCALO Revolution DVD cover

VOCALO Revolution was a VOCALOID related one-off TV program that aired in Japan on January 3, 2011. The show was about the Japanese VOCALOIDs and consisted of interviews with the developers of the software, as well as popular producers within Japan. It showcased the latest PVs at the time.

The TV show was also aimed at expanding the awareness and acceptance of the VOCALOID "culture" within Japan. One of the successful stories was the "VOCALO Revolution x CECIL McBEE" school line of clothing "MUSIC × FASHION × DANCE".[189][190] The show featured CUL's debut music video "CUL makes REVOLUTION!" as its ending. A DVD of the show was later released.[191]

VOCALO Revolution held a song contest called the CUL Theme Song Contest (CULテーマソングコンテスト) where the winning song would be used as the theme song for the TV program. Songs were to be uploaded onto NicoNicoDouga by February 25, and a female VOCALOID from Internet Co., Ltd., AH-Software Co., Ltd., Crypton Future Media Co., Ltd., or Yamaha Corporation could be used.[192] It was announced on May 30 that the winning song was ふわりクレヨン by ふわりP. The Special Internet Prize was also awarded to "Dokidoki x Dokidoki" by Eon with lyrics by nuru.[193]

HirotoP mentioned "making use of feedback for the next VOCALO Revolution" after the first episode of the show aired, but a second episode never materialized.[194]

CUL Excuse me VOCALOID book cover

Book cover

On May 19, 2012, Kosaido Publishing published Excuse me, do you know VOCALOID? (拝啓、あなたはボーカロイドを知っていますか?) by Hōjō Toshimasa. The story is about a coming-of-age story of high school girls who create songs with VOCALOID, participate in a traditional festival, and dance around to VOCALOID songs. It centers around a female Vocalo-P and features CUL. The story is written to appeal to VOCALOID fans and non-fans all ages alike.[210]

Story[]

On February 4, 2011 HirotoP and Lat distributes a black recolor of CUL's official MMD model dubbed "BLACKCUL" (黒CUL) which he calls "another version of CUL".[197] In reference to BLACKCUL he starts calling her regular red version, REDCUL (赤CUL).

On September 6, 2012, HirotoP first mentions CUL's initial concept of having three other sisters. He also mentions a "Chuuni concept where BLACKCUL is CUL's twin sister nicknamed "Nuregarasu".[211]

On June 29, 2013, HirotoP revealed that CUL was the youngest of four sisters themed around "Fuusetsugekka" (風雪月花). The sisters were themed around a different color: blue, white, yellow, and red and based on the concepts of wind, snow, moon and flowers respectfully. CUL representing the color red and the flower element specifically.[33] BLACKCUL, CUL's twin sister who was themed around the color black, was also mentioned. The sisters were later given profiles and featured in a comic illustrated by Megumi Inomata.[34][35]

On September 19, 2020, HirotoP disclosed that REV is childhood friends with CUL from the same neighborhood, him acting as a form of big brother figure to her.[40]

On April 6, 2021, HirotoP published a short story centered around ROSA, living in a church with nuns and wondering who she really is. The story ends when she meets a girl with red hair tied in a ponytail and wearing a black coat. She introduces herself as CUL, her older sister who has come to get her.[212]

On December 4, HirotoP mentioned CUL coming from a family of ninjas.[213]

On February 17, 2022, HirotoP via CUL's Twitter account revealed that CUL and her sisters grew up in a shinobi village, which was under constant threat by hostile forces. BLACKCUL was kidnapped by evil forces when she was 4 years old and was only rescued when she was 14. For her safety, ROSA was also separated from her family when she was young. She was sent to live in a church of a small mountain to live with nuns.[214] ROSA is also a legitimate bearer of the CUL name, but her name was changed so that her relationship with her sisters would not be exposed.[215] For much of her life, she had believed she was alone and often questioned who she was and what her purpose in life is.

October 7, 2023, HirotoP introduced more lore and a few retcons. Rather than the sisters names being some form of "CUL", with them having aliases to differentiate each other, CUL now originates from a hunter clan (狩族, kari zoku, but can also be pronounced karu zoku) that they belong to. The Karu clan is a tribe of ninjas from the Kamakura period who serve no lord and operate secretly. CUL is a code name assigned to the kunoichi of the clan, meaning that those with the CUL name are not necessarily blood related but still treat each other like sisters. What this means for the sisters is unknown, making REDCUL and BLACKCUL the only definite blood relationship. ROSA was given to a church when she was a baby and given a different name so she wouldn't be involved in the Karu's clan war with another clan.[136]

Social Media[]

HirotoP's Twitter account has been the main hub of information for CUL and related characters for years since her inception. With the establishment of his company ZAN-SHIN in 2021, it received a Twitter account of its own on March 27.[216] While HirotoP's account is still the main hub of information regarding lore, all information regarding products and events are mainly disseminated on ZAN-SHIN's Twitter account.

An official Twitter was set up for Lucia on January 21, 2011.[217][218] The account was run by mion, a CULNOZA member, for CUL's PR for the western community, although it was also used for the Japanese community. It was only active for a little bit longer than a year, the account going inactive ever since March 2012.

An official Twitter account was started for ROSA on June 5,[219] and another for CUL a day later on June 6.[220]

WhiteCUL started her own Twitter account on September 30, 2022.[221]

REV received his own official Twitter account on July 19, 2023.[222]
