RUBY, also stylized as RVBY, is an English vocal that was initially developed by Prince Syo, a VOCALOID and UTAU producer, and Anders Sodergren, an audio engineer from PowerFX Systems AB.. She was released in October 2015 by PowerFX for the VOCALOID4 engine, under the name RUBY.
In October 2023, in celebration of the eighth anniversary of RUBY's VOCALOID release, a private voice model was announced to be in development for the AI-powered singing voice synthesis engine DiffSinger.[1] The vocal was created using a blend of her voice provider's own singing samples in addition to recording data from RUBY's VOCALOID voicebank. At the time of it's debut, the vocal was about 20% completed.[2][3] The vocal was not released to the public due to a copyright on the vocal recordings by the Yamaha Corporation, however, it was noted by Prince Syo that future plans would be revealed for RUBY at a later date.[4][5] Her voice provider has also expressed interest in developing RUBY further into other potential vocal synthesis engines such as VOCALOID6 or Synthesizer V Studio.[6]
She is now expected to receive an AI voicebank for Maghni AI, dubbed RVBY, which is being developed and to be distributed by VRILLIANT in collaboration with Crescendia, LLC;[7] a release date has not yet been announced.
She is voiced by an active American VOCALOID fan, Misha.[8]
Concept[]
RUBY is based on a female singer with a standard American accent.[9]
Upon her debut as RVBY for Maghni AI, her profile was expanded. Her birthday was listed as April 8th, her Zodiac sign was listed as an Aries, her height was listed at 152 cm, her weight was listed at 44 kg, her favorite food was noted to be PlĆ”tano Maduros Fritos (known in English as Fried Plantains), and her favorite activities include fighting games and nail art. She is described to be a lively and charismatic girl who loves teasing her friends and charming those around her. She seems confident, but deep down, sheās insecure and worries about how others see her. To hide this, she embraces a bold and flamboyant personality.
Despite her carefree attitude, RUBY takes her work as a performer very seriously. Offstage, sheās much more low energy, needing time to recharge. Sheās highly competitive when playing her favorite genre, fighting games, and finds comfort in nail art as a creative escape when stressed.[10]
Appearance[]
Her developer hinted that the voice provider was not white which may have influenced the design.[11][12]
PowerFX revealed an unexpected design at Anime Expo due to a miscommunication between the developers and the company. The misunderstanding was resolved after negotiations with the voice provider. More information can be found on the Controversy Concerns page on the VOCALOID Wiki.
The final art by Natasha Allegri was worked upon for free though she insisted on not being paid. The concept itself was designed by Misha with some input from her friends.[13][14] Misha stated that she wanted this concept to be like an 'opposite Miku'.[15] This concept's skintone was based on Misha's mother, as she wanted RUBY to represent not only her but also her family.[16] Temi, who collaborated with Misha in creating the concept, said the design was supposed to portray an upbeat and sporty personality.[17] Misha wanted the outfit to reflect the Bronx, her hometown. Uniqueness and simplicity were major aims during the design process. From the beginning, sneakers were a must for the outfit, but a skirt was ruled out.[18] The belt, shorts, and hairstyle came from the producers' desire to add a few anime aspects in order to fit more into the 'ideal' VOCALOID style. Early concepts of RUBY included a younger age and a side ponytail.[19]
In RUBY's initial designs, she had braids, a hat, and different styles of clothing.[20] However, the braids were removed because Rana was revealed to have pink braids as well.[21]RUBY's illustration used for her DiffSinger in-editor artwork was repurposed from an unofficial vocal synthesizer fan event titled "RUBY Gala" that was created to "celebrate the love of vocal synthesizers."[22]

History[]
2013[]
RUBY started as an independent project in December 2013 with only Prince Syo working on her. Half a year later, he was joined by Anders Sodergren, who had previously worked for VocaTone.[23] Despite Anders helping Syo, a development team did not exist, since Syo exclusively worked on RUBY for the most part.[24][25]
At some point, Syo searched for companies that could support RUBY and PowerFX, Zero-G and Crypton expressed interest in the project. It became clear that Crypton would not allow much creative freedom at all. Anders thought that Zero-G and PowerFX would be better candidates because he had worked with and trusted them.[26] The two chose PowerFX because they would allow more control over the design.[27] Anders later remarked that at no point was anyone promised any control over the final design and that it was his decision to choose PowerFX.[28]
2014[]
On September 19, 2014, Syo publicly revealed that he and Anders were working on a VOCALOID and a voice sample of RUBY was posted.[29] At the time, RUBY was affiliated only with VocaTone, but not PowerFX.[29][30] However, Bil Bryant, the CEO of PowerFX, revealed in October that RUBY would be delayed so that she could be updated to the VOCALOID4 engine.[31][32]
On October 30, Natasha Allegri posted concept images. It was revealed that she and another artist had been requested to submit concept art for consideration.[33] At the time, it was not confirmed if the concept art would be used in RUBY's final design or whether either of the artists were to be chosen as the final illustrator.
2015[]
Early in 2015, some early production samples of RUBY were discovered. Syo explained that these test audio clips were not the original uploads of these samples. The originals had been removed and someone else re-uploaded them. However, there was no objection to them existing so long as everyone acknowledged that they were of early versions of RUBY's vocal and that they did not reflect the current status of the project.[34][35]
It was announced that RUBY would be associated with PowerFX.[36]
Syo expressed a desire to create at least two voicebanks for RUBY to take advantage of VOCALOID4's cross synthesis capabilities, but was unsure due to the doubled workload.[37][38] The extra workload was owed to the increase in triphonetic data. In addition, PowerFX was only willing to pay for one English voicebank. They wanted to see how well the voicebank sold before adding any additional voicebanks.[39] It was also confirmed that RUBY originally had a Japanese voicebank, but this was scrapped.[40] Her English recordings were redone to sound similar to her Japanese voicebank.[41]
On June 10, Syo asked for original songs that he could use for RUBY demos within a week.[42] Examples had to be sent in and he would decide if the song would be accepted as a demo.[43]
After resolving miscommunication issues with PowerFX, it was confirmed that Natasha Allegri would illustrate the design for the physical copy of RUBY based on the concept Misha, the voice provider, worked on. It took 3 days to produce the art instead of the expected 1ā2 weeks.[44] Natasha commented that doing the art made her very happy.[45]
On September 18, Syo tweeted that RUBY would be released within the month.[46] Later that day, he tweeted that the release date of the download version would be the September 23. Boxed versions would be available afterwards.[47] On September 23, it was noted that she was to be delayed.[48] She was officially released as a digital download on October 7.
Her physical version and bundle package were made available on December 12.[49][50]

Marketing[]
PowerFX had originally hoped to aim RUBY at EDM producers. Syo presented alternative ideas and thought it was better to expand upon the existing demographic, arguing that people who aren't fans of the VOCALOID software won't buy it.[51][52]
RUBY has been featured in VOCAMERICA since 2016 along with DEX and DAINA.
Voicebanks[]
- RUBY
- RUBY was a voicebank intended to give a powerful vocal result. She had a number of voicebank fixes, though was created independent of the new English script by YAMAHA used for CYBER DIVA and CYBER SONGMAN. The voice is weighty with odd inflections.
- Misc voicebanks
- A Japanese voicebank was recorded for her but never released. She also had a VOCALOID3 version that was unreleased.
- RUBY AI
- A private AI voicebank developed for RUBY.
- RUBY AI (DiffSinger), Private
- RVBY
- An AI voicebank in development for RUBY.
Reputation[]
Reaction[]
Her demo, "Problem", eventually reached 100,000 views, putting it on par with other past English VOCALOIDs, but making the slow attempt compared to CYBER DIVA took much longer, being a year and a half to do so.
