RIME (()()) is a vocal synthesizer character derived from the Japanese Virtual Singer, RIM. She was released as a Japanese singing voicebank for CeVIO AI, developed by KAMITSUBAKI STUDIO as a part of the ARTIFICIAL SINGING SYNTHESIZER series in October 2022.

On December 17, 2023, it was announced that RIME would be released as a text-to-speech library for VOICEPEAK, which was released on February 26, 2024.[1][2][3]

RIME's voice is provided by the virtual singer, RIM.

Concept[]

RIME is advertised as a "ARTIFICIAL SINGING SYNTHESIZER" (音楽的同位体) of her voice provider RIM, similar to that of KAFU and SEKAI. In her reveal video, the concept phrase is "あなたの想いを響かせよう" (Let your thoughts echo throughout),[4] which was likely to emphasize the user-side aspect: the creative freedom of singing synthesizers in general. Her signature color is red, specifically hex code #E51500.[5]

Etymology[]

RIME's name is a stylized version of her voice provider RIM's name, and it is a portmanteau of "RIM" and "ECHO."

The kanji of her name 裏命 (RIME) translates literally to "reverse fate" or "back fate".

Additionally, the name "RIME" shares its romanization with RIM's character "Tanioki Rime" (谷置狸眼) from KAMITSUBAKI CITY UNDER CONSTRUCTION. (神椿市建設中。) So far, this trait is also shared by the other Musical Isotopes.

Appearance[]

RIME's appearance and theme are based on that of her voice provider RIM with many similar design elements and an overall white color-scheme. RIME is a young woman with short white hair and choppy bangs. The inside layers of her hair are blue. She wears a black star shaped barrette consisting of two black squares with red points and centers layered over each other. She has very long and feathery eyelashes, with her pupils being a mixture of dark blue, sky blue, and bright purple. She wears a clear earring with a red center on her left ear. RIME wears a high-necked button up dress with two skinny parallel blue stripes decorating the skirt. Over it is a loose fitting black jacket with white and blue geometrical shaped patches on the sleeves, crimson and blue stripes around the jacket's cuffs, red strings, and silver diamond-shaped metal plates. The hem of her jacket has two triangles cut out, giving the appearance of trim. Her hood bears the same triangle pattern, the same as KAFU’s, a fellow MUSICAL ISOTOPE. She wears lined black tights with four red dots just below the knee. Her shoes are blue short boots with red soles and tongues with a single black chevron decorating it.

RIME was illustrated by Japanese freelance painter & character designer PALOW.

2022[]

On March 3, 2022, in a press release regarding the previous Musical Isotope vocal SEKAI, KAMITSUBAKI STUDIO revealed that all five Virtual Witch Phenomenon singers would be receiving CeVIO AI voices to complete the collection of the Musical Isotope brand.[6]

During the Virtual Witch Phenomenon V.W.P 1st ONE-MAN LIVE concert, it was announced that the next Musical Isotope vocal would be RIME, based on the virtual vocalist RIM. The vocal was planned at the time to be released in the Summer of 2022.[7]

RIME was featured at the 2022 Nico Nico Chokaigi KAMITSUBAKI STUDIO ARTIFICIAL SINGING SYNTHESIZER booth on April 29th and 30th alongside KAFU and SEKAI. Video content such as software introduction videos and artist music videos were projected, and panels featuring the Musical Isotopes were exhibited.[8]

On July 5, KAMITSUBAKI STUDIO announced the ARTIFICIAL SINGING SYNTHESIZER 1ST ANNIVERSARY PROGRAM livestream event to be held on July 7.[9][10] The event featured voice actress and singer Miyu Tomita joined by KAFU, SEKAI and guest-starring voice providers Isekaijoucho, KAF and RIM who conducted a series of new announcements regarding the ARTIFICIAL SINGING SYNTHESIZER project.[11] An official website was created for RIME.[12]
