Otomachi Una ((おと)(まち)ウナ) is a Japanese vocal synthesis character developed by Internet Co., Ltd. in collaboration with MTK Inc. and was released in July 2016 for the VOCALOID4 engine. She also received a talk voicebank dubbed Otomachi Una Talk Ex in April 2017, which was updated and released for the VOICEROID2 line in December 2020, both of which run on the AITalk engine. In July 2021, she was also released for the Voidol voice conversion engine. In June 2023, she received an AI update for VOCALOID6; she also received a VOICEPEAK talk bank later in September. She received an AI voice database (developed by AH-Software Co. Ltd.) for Synthesizer V Studio in November 2024. She was announced to receive a A.I.VOICE2 talk bank[1] to be released in February 2025.[2]

She is voiced by the Japanese voice actress, Tanaka Aimi (()(なか)あいみ).

Concept[]

Una comes with two voicebanks titled "Sugar" and "Spicy". These names, as well as her age of 11, are likely a reference to the old nursery rhyme "What Are Little Boys Made Of?". In the rhyme, little girls are said to be made of 3 things: sugar, spice, and everything nice.

Etymology[]

It is likely that her given name "Una" is based on unagi ("eel") in reference to her hat. The kanji in her surname literally means "sound" (, oto) and "town" (, machi).[3]

Appearance[]

Sugar

In Una's Sugar design, her outfit is based on a marching band uniform. Ottoman Bō, her hat, has black pupils, pale-blue eyelashes, pink lips and a white and pink rim, with white pink bows on either side of its head. The same bows are on the tip of Una's braids. She wears a blue sailor suit style shirt with white puffy sleeves, pink stripes and buttons on the cuffs and collar, and a red tie with a gold treble clef tie pin. Around her neck is a gold necklace with a large iridescent whistle pendant. She has see-through detached sleeves stylized after a brass instrument. The breast of her shirt is white with a gold piano key-like pattern and gold trim. Underneath is an apron-style piece that is the same deep blue with gold trim, pleats, buttons, and an alto clef pattern. It is tied behind her in a blue bow. Her white pleated skirt has hot pink stripes with little music notes above it, and see-through ruffly pink fringe. Around her leg is a gold bass clef on a three-bar staff clasp. Her left sock is white and has a hot pink piano key motif, and the right is a plain white crew sock. Her blue sneakers have gold rims, buttons, and soles. They have a gold and light blue iridescent wing attached to the heel. In her left hand, she carries a bow-tipped, iridescent blue and gold trimmed baton with red knotted strings wrapped along the length of the baton.

Spicy
Una's Spicy design is based on a school uniform. For the Spicy design, Ottoman Bō has pink eyelashes, a yellow lightning bolt under its right eye, and two glowing translucent yellow cones on either side of its head, possibly referencing horns. Una's bangs have two streaks of yellow, and the tips of her braids fade from blue to yellow. Instead of bows on her hair ties, she has electric green lightning bolts. Under her left eye is a hot pink eighth note (or quaver note). Una wears a sleeveless white button up shirt with pink stripes on the collar. Over this, is a black suit jacket. The shoulders of the sleeves are unzipped, exposing her shoulders, with the cuffs of her sleeves also unzipped and billowing out up to her forearms. The lapels are dark blue with neon green trim. Her tie is red with a gold lightning bolt tie clip. On the lower bottom of the jacket is an F-hole decoration like that on a violin. Her gloves are black and green, with the thumb and pointer finger cut out. On her right wrist is a black studded bracelet. Her skirt is similar to the Sugar design, but without the music note pattern. A double black belt with neon green stripes and silver studs attaches a translucent electric green half-skirt to the right side of her skirt. Her left thigh-high sock is hot pink with a white piano key design, and her right is mesh and attached to a band around her thigh by a black belt. Her shoes are black, chunky, heeled boots bearing neon green detailing and soles. The folds have rows of silver studs on them. She carries a silver microphone with a lightning bolt emblem and neon green base in her left hand.

Sugar

Una's V6 Sugar outfit, like her V4, is loosely based on a marching band uniform. Ottoman Bō remains largely unchanged from the V4 Sugar design. The hat is royal blue with purple eyes and lips, white bows with purple stripes and golden stars. Una's twin tails are a gradient of bright purple to ice blue. They are decorated with gold stars and the same bows on Ottoman Bō. Her nails are painted a plum color. A single strip of her bangs is a vibrant purple. She wears a collared white minidress with a frilly hem. Over this, is a pastel see-through purple skirt. It has a dark and light blue hem, with golden music note and stars. A yellow four-petal flower attached to a red ribbon is tied around her collar. The top petal is bright purple. Around her waist is a royal blue corset. It has blue coattails, a white bow, gold stripes and buttons, and a golden alto clef. Her accessories consist of white frilly trimmed blue cuffs on either wrist. Her boots are blue with gold heels, soles, and toes. There are yellow, icy blue, and light pink bows on the shafts. A white "x" is on the top, white stitching on the sides, and white flaps with a purple piano key pattern. In her right hand, she carries a silver and blue cordless microphone attached to a metal rod with three yellow, icy blue, and light pink bows.

Spicy
In Otomachi Una’s V6 Spicy design, her blue twin tails are entwined with an electric green interior fading into a vibrant yellow. The tips are ice blue. A single streak in her bangs is green, and shaped like a lightning bolt. The only differences between V6 Spicy Ottoman Bō and Sugar Ottoman Bō is the yellow cones on its head, and it has red eyes instead of purple. Una’s hair is decorated with yellow stars and purple-striped white bows. Her fingernails are painted a bright shade of blue. Under her left eye is a purple lightning bolt. She wears a sleeveless white and navy blue top. It has thick navy blue straps, navy blue coattails with plum interiors, yellow tips, silver buttons, neon green violin f-holes near the hem, and a black collar. Her tie is translucent green and yellow with a yellow lightning bolt clip at the base. This clip is attached to two silver chains with five music note charms, three beamed eighth note charms and two singular eighth note charms. These are fastened to the straps of her top in the back by a green band. She wears quarter-length black fingerless gloves, neon green bracelets, and black studded bands. Her shorts are black, fastened by a green cape-like skirt. Her tights are dark magenta. On the left leg is a piano key pattern, while her right leg has oval shaped holes cut out. Around her right leg is a navy blue garter belt. Her shoes are black sneakers with neon green soles, toes, and flaps. They have purple laces, and silver zippers. In her right hand, she carries a small black, green, and gold trimmed handheld microphone attached to a long electric green and yellow cable.

History[]

On June 15, 2016, a teaser trailer was uploaded to what is now Otomachi Una's official YouTube channel revealing the silhouettes of two VOCALOID libraries: Sugar and Spicy.[4] A few weeks later, on June 30, another video was uploaded, revealing that the two VOCALOID libraries belonged to one character: Otomachi Una.[5] Her VOCALOID4 package would release one month later, on July 30.

2017[]

A few months after her VOCALOID release, on March 8, 2017, another teaser was uploaded featuring the designs of Sugar and Spicy, along with a hidden third Una design that was yet unrevealed.[6] One week later, the full design was shown, belonging to Otomachi Una Talk.[7] Una Talk (or Talk Ex) ran on the same engine as VOICEROID+ EX, AITalk3, but was not part of the VOICEROID lineup as the brand is owned by AH-Software Co. Ltd.

Since her initial release as a singing and speaking mascot, Una has participated in various collaborations with companies.

2020[]

On November 11, 2020, Una's VOICEROID2, running on AITalk4, was revealed, and she released on December 11.[8] At the same time, her Talk Ex version was discontinued for sale.[9]

2021[]

On July 16, 2021, Una was both announced and released for the real-time input engine Voidol.[10]

2023[]

On May 17, 2023, GUMI's Twitter account tweeted that there would be a major announcement and release information scheduled for May 24 at 20:00 JST.[11][12] Otomachi Una's Twitter account acknowledged the tweet, seeming to allude and lead fans to suspect that the announcement was related to her.[13][14]

On May 24, Una was revealed to be receiving a VOCALOID6 update that was expected to release on June 22.[15] She made her debut with updated designs for "Sugar" and "Spicy", illustrated by Kurisu Toshi,[16] and two demos showcasing both voicebanks, with Aimi Tanaka reprising the role. Una was confirmed to be releasing as a complete box set with both voicebanks and standalones for each one. Starter packs were available for the complete set and the individual voicebanks as well. Pre-order bonuses depending on when a customer purchased AI Otomachi Una were also confirmed. For those who pre-ordered at Internet Co., Ltd.'s online shop or special sale by 15:00 JST on June 22, they will receive "Otomachi Una Cute Booster 3", which contained 211 additional audio files, for free. For those who pre-ordered by May 31 will receive the Booster and a A4 clear posters of Sugar, Spicy, and both designs together. VST3 plug-ins were included, containing "XSyn", which would produce a similar effect to VOCALOID4's Cross-Synthesis feature, "AirFX", which controls "Air" (breath component) and "Mouth Open" (degree of mouth opening), and "Formant Shift 2", which changes the character of the vocal tone.[17] AI Otomachi Una released on June 22 as expected.

On August 9, Una was announced to be receiving an AI text-to-speech voice database for VOICEPEAK, with release date set for September 7.[18]

2024[]

On November 1, 2024, Internet Co., Ltd. announced that Una would be receiving a voice database for Synthesizer V Studio, slated for release on November 27. She would also be receiving a set of additional voice material under the name Otomachi Una Cute Booster 4. This product allows for even more expressiveness for Una across all her current products. This product was set to release the same day as her Synthesizer V AI voice database. Like GUMI and Hibiki Koto, Una's SynthV voice database was developed by AH-Software Co. Ltd..

Later on December 20, AI, Inc. announced that new activations of Otomachi Una Talk Ex, based on AITalk 3, would no longer be possible after March 31, 2026 when her activation servers were expected to cease operations. To remedy this, she was announced to receive a new talk voicebank for A.I.VOICE2 (based on AITalk 6), but no release date was announced; a new pair of silhouette images of Una were shown along with the announcement.[19][1]

2025[]

On January 21, 2025, Una's A.I.VOICE2 design, another variation on the Saitou Naoki design used for Talk Ex and VOICEROID2, was revealed, and pre-orders were opened for the new talk voicebank, with release date expected for February 20.[20][21][2]

Voicebanks[]

Otomachi Una - Sugar
The Sugar vocal was created to give a large number of tones for XSY, especially when combined with "Spicy". It is a cute and sweet sounding young female vocal, an example of voice acting. The Una vocal was fairly beginner friendly and high quality, being one of Internet Co., Ltd.'s highest quality voicebanks. It was one of the largest vocal ranges of VOCALOID4 and few vocals could compete with it, one of the few beating it being the "Spicy" vocal.
