OpenUtau is a unofficial open source successor to UTAU. As of November 2021, it is in beta and supports Windows, MacOS, and Linux.

History[]

About a year after its last update, VOCALOID producer StAkira decided to create a successor to the original UTAU program, since it had not received any updates since 2013. They created OpenUtau to give users a modern version of UTAU due to the software aging poorly and sketchy compatibility on modern PCs and OS. The software began early development and was initially posted to GitHub on November 27, 2014.[1] After years of work, OpenUtau was released in beta form on August 12, 2021.[2] The software has built in phonetic support for Japanese, Korean, and Chinese voicebanks, as well as English ARPABET voicebanks. It uses its own file format .ustx, but also supports importing UTAU .ust files and VOCALOID .vsqx files. Unlike the original UTAU program, OpenUtau does not come with a resampling engine so one must be downloaded elsewhere, or imported from the original software.

Resampler compatibility[]

OpenUtau has been tested to be compatible with multiple UTAU resampling engines.
