Clara is a Spanish VOCALOID developed and distributed by Voctro Labs, S.L., and was released in December 2011 for the VOCALOID3 engine. She, along with Bruno, were the first Spanish voicebanks commercially distributed. Her voice provider has never been revealed.
Concept[]
Etymology[]
"Clara" is a female given name. It is the feminine form of the late Latin name "Clarus" which meant "clear, bright, famous".[1]
Appearance[]
Her initial concept and overall appearance were done by Raimon Benach. When the illustration contest was performed, the Spanish company requested to the participants to keep the overall design of the original illustration. Rumple's winning entry was adopted as the new official art.
With the release of the boxed versions, the design had a new revision done by Rumple. The new design had a more daring look, but kept the previous design. Among the major changes, Clara's shirt is now transparent, her highlights changed from white to blond, and her body build is less skinny.
Relations[]
- Bruno - A complementary voice bank with masculine vocals.
History[]
Marketing[]
Clara and Bruno were aimed at Spanish music professionals and were the first VOCALOIDs aimed at Spanish culture. They do not incorporate the moe-esque[2] style of some Japanese VOCALOIDs. Their original designs lean more towards a retrospective European art style. This, however, changed due to the response by anime fans being disappointed by the artwork, thus a fanart competition was held.
Voicebanks[]
- Clara
- The first female vocalist who sung in Spanish. Clara was a mature female vocal with a Castilian Spanish accent. It was also the counter-partner vocal to Bruno.
Reputation[]
Reaction[]
Clara suffered backlash based on her first illustration by Raimon Benach, mainly for lacking an anime-like design or referred to as not having the appearance of a VOCALOID, with some went as far as to label Clara and Bruno as "ugly". However, within the Spanish fandom, there have been reports of strong defense from fans of the pair and VOCALOID. The voice type itself has been said to be appealing in general, despite the issues some fans had with the first illustration.
By March 2012, Bruno and Clara were amongst the least popular of the VOCALOID3 voicebanks. Though together they are more popular than Tonio, neither surpassed his popularity when weighed in separately.[3] Her popularity, according to Google Trends, peaked in January 2012, a month after her release, but she gradually lost popularity in the closing months of VOCALOID3, making her among the least popular VOCALOIDs.
Impact[]
The reaction towards the initial artwork may have had a later impact on future VOCALOIDs, and was one of the theories put forward as the reason YAMAHA rejected the original non-"anime-esque" design for AVANNA.[4]
Achievements[]
- First VOCALOID by Voctro Labs
