Aoyama Ryusei ((あお)(やま)(りゅう)(せい)) (sometimes written as Ryuusei),[1] also known as SEIRYU (セイリュウ), is a Japanese vocal synthesizer character developed by VirVox Project. He is the third character from the VirVox Project series and was initially released in February 2022 for the VOICEVOX text-to-speech synthesizer. He was later released as a text-to-speech library for A.I.VOICE through the A.I.VOICE Junior program in November 2022. An update for A.I.VOICE2 was released in November 2024.[2]

His voice is provided by the Japanese Virtual YouTuber, Mimic=Wonderbox (みみっく=わんだぁぼっくす).

Concept[]

VirVox project's goal is to increase the variety and number of masculine vocals in vocal synths. Ryusei boasts a deep, bass vocal.

Etymology[]

His alias "セイリュウ (SEIRYU)" means "blue dragon". In Japanese mythology, it is one of the four guardian spirits of Kyoto and one of the four symbols of the Chinese constellations (the "Azure Dragon", the "Vermilion Bird", the "White Tiger", and the "Black Tortoise"), which are said to be four mythological creatures appearing among the Chinese constellations along the ecliptic, and are viewed as the guardians of the four cardinal directions it also represents the east as a direction, wood as the Chinese element and the spring season.

While his alias uses the Japanese name, "SEIRYU", his name is written using the hanzi "青龍" in Chinese, which is pronounced "Qinglong" (Qīnglóng). The kanji for Seiryu is "青竜".

His name is taken from the hanzi of Seiryu (青龍), his last name takes the first hanzi () to make Aoyama (山) while his first name takes the second hanzi () to make Ryuusei (星). Incidentally his given name is a phonetical anagram of the beast he's based on.

Appearance[]

Ryusei is described as a big and rugged young man.[3] He is associated with the color blue.[4] He has black hair that's gray on the sides and sideburns. He also has magenta eyes with small irises. His eyebrows are thick and black.

He wears a blue anorak coat with a fur-hemmed hood and a red design on the left breast. Underneath he wears a black sweater and blueish-white pants alongside black boots with blue belts and white soles that reach halfway up his calves. He also wears a choker with a triangular pendant around his neck.

Personality[]

Ryusei is described as having a quiet and cool-headed demeanor.[3] He's often misunderstood as being angry due to his silence, lack of actions and facial expressions. While he may be taciturn, he's not completely silent.[5]

On March 25, Ryusei's profile on the official site was updated to tease an upcoming engine he would be on temporarily labelled "??????".[13]On March 27 during the Talk Software Upload Festival, they announced that they’d be adding emotion styles for Ryusei’s VOICEVOX.[14]

On April 7, they teased at a big announcement at the end of the month.

On April 22, the big announcement was revealed to be that Ryusei would be receiving an A.I.VOICE text-to-speech library.[16] Aoyama Ryusei was to receive an A.I.VOICE Junior with a planned Autumn 2022 release schedule. It was confirmed that after onidaruma's stepping down as VirVox Project's main artist that Ryusei's A.I.VOICE illustration would still be done by Onidaruma.[17] His A.I.VOICE design and release date of November 18 were announced on October 20.[18] There are also plans to record additional exVOICE for his A.I.VOICE release.[19] On November 18, his A.I.VOICE Junior released, with a complete boxed version to be released later on.[20]

On October 1, 2024, VirVox Project posted a press release announcement that all artwork, including those featuring Ryusei and the other VirVox Project characters that have been illustrated by the former official illustrator, onidaruma, would be removed from the official website following a legal dispute and official separation between the artist and the project over the use of conceptual designs. VirVox Project noted that they plan to focus on designs with various concepts by a variety of illustrators hoped that fans would enjoy the new illustrations that would "bring a new world view to the series."[22] It was stated that as the illustrations used for VOICEVOX and A.I.VOICE were commissioned pieces, VirVox Project noted that users could continue to use the released artwork as normal and would continue to be allowed for use in derivative works, such as creating videos using derivative character images or illustrations.[23] A full explanation of the situation was released on October 12.[24]

On October 4, following the press release, a confirmation update regarding the long-awaited A.I.VOICE2 release for Ryusei was reconfirmed and would feature a new illustration. It was announced that he would release during the month of November.[25] A portion of Ryusei's illustration was used as the new VirVox Project Twitter profile logo.[26] A second portion of the design's boots were shown shortly after.[27]

His release date was later narrowed down to November 29.[2]
